Watching my son deal with eczema has been difficult. When his skin becomes dry, itchy, or irritated, I want to do everything I can to help him feel comfortable—especially around bath time and bedtime.

Every child’s skin is different, and we’re still learning what works best for ours. But creating a simple, consistent routine has made caring for his sensitive skin feel much more manageable. These are the Aveeno Baby products we keep in our routine.

1. Aveeno Baby Daily Moisture Wash & Shampoo

We try to keep bath time gentle and uncomplicated. This wash and shampoo lets us cleanse his hair and body without adding several different products to the tub.

I use a small amount, rinse it off thoroughly, and avoid making the water too hot. Warm, shorter baths tend to be kinder to his sensitive skin than long, hot ones.

2. Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Soothing Bath Treatment

When his skin is feeling especially dry or irritated, we sometimes add this colloidal oatmeal bath treatment to his routine. It’s designed to help soothe dry, itchy skin.

We follow the package directions carefully and supervise him throughout the bath. Afterward, I gently pat his skin dry instead of rubbing it with the towel.

3. Aveeno Baby Eczema Therapy Nighttime Balm

Moisturizing immediately after a bath is one of the most important parts of our routine. While his skin is still slightly damp, I apply the nighttime balm to help lock in moisture.

The balm has a richer texture than a regular lotion, so I especially like using it on areas that tend to become very dry. Despite the name, it can also be used whenever our routine calls for a thicker moisturizer.

4. Aveeno Baby Sensitive Skin Bubble Bath

Bath time should still be enjoyable, so we occasionally use this sensitive-skin bubble bath. I’m careful not to use too much, and I pay attention to how my son’s skin responds.

Because eczema triggers can vary from child to child, a product that works well for one family may not work for another. If we notice that anything seems to bother his skin, we stop using it.

Our Simple Bath-Time Routine

Our routine usually looks like this:

  1. Use warm—not hot—water.
  2. Keep bath time relatively short.
  3. Cleanse gently without scrubbing.
  4. Pat his skin dry with a soft towel.
  5. Apply a moisturizer shortly after the bath.
  6. Dress him in soft, comfortable clothing.

Consistency has been more helpful for us than trying an overly complicated routine. I also introduce new products one at a time, which makes it easier to notice how his skin reacts.

A Note for Other Parents

This post shares our family’s personal experience and is not medical advice. Eczema can have different causes and triggers, so it’s always a good idea to speak with your child’s pediatrician or dermatologist before changing their skincare routine—especially if the skin is painful, infected, oozing, rapidly worsening, or interfering with sleep.

Most importantly, don’t feel discouraged if it takes time to find a routine that suits your child. You’re not alone, and you’re doing a wonderful job caring for them.
